we can rule out this being a late 16th-century portrait for several reasons

It was probably painted outside with the sea view stretching out in front of him

His portrait of Ella is rendered with sensitivity and a stronger palette than usual

For a number of years he exhibited at the wonderfully named ‘Woodpecker Sketch Club’
